I completely understand what you mean. My grandparents are quite old too and I care for them a lot. But I guess I'm a true Sagittarian-- itchy feet, untameable. It's a very difficult decision with regret waiting at every turn, whether I stay or go. As a son, I owe my family my heart, but as an adult I can never fully give it to them. I guess that's part of the burden of being the "baby" of the family-- they are used to unending affection.Manggyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05977929776424593762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-589144729472463179.post-26422739692487894552007-11-15T00:04:00.000-05:002007-11-15T00:04:00.000-05:00Hi Manggy. The dish looks yummy, probably tastes good too.

I never really thought about leaving seriously but took the MLE so that I have an alternative. I passed but I've always seen myself being in the Philippines.

I come from a family of doctors. Three of my mom's siblings are doctors and 2 of them are married to doctors too. That makes 5 doctors in the family. But 4 of them chose to train and settle in the US. Only one chose to stay. When my grandmother got sick, it was very difficult for my youngest uncle-doctor. He was brilliant, on top of his class but when it came to treating the person who matters to him most, he was far away and because of visa issues, couldn't come home. It was hard for him and my lola.

Maybe that's one of the reasons why I stayed. And I don't regret it. There are plenty of opportunities locally.

And in Singapore. My sister who's based in Singapore is here all the time.

I followed my heart. If your heart tells you to go for training elsewhere, go. I wish you well.docemdyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17342987031560133229noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-589144729472463179.post-65973745701982455262007-11-14T21:11:00.000-05:002007-11-14T21:11:00.000-05:00Jodirem: thank you, that's so sweet. Oh, EGGPLANT! JUst kidding. If I do continue to train in the UK, I'll have to get used to it, haha. Aubergines. My dad doesn't know how to use a computer; I guess I'll teach him how to use a webcam, 'cause I can't blog as freely with my parents judging my posts, heh :)

Bri: Thanks for the wishes :) I actually don't like eggplant so much, but there's something magical about eggplant parmigiana, especially when it's grilled and not sauteed. Striking it rich and going wherever I want would be the BEST :)

Anh: You'd think preparing meals and planning all my mom's parties would be proof enough, right? But they get on my case for not making my bed in the morning, haha :) I'm like, "It's just a bed!! I don't care!!!"

Joey: That's a wise way of putting it! I guess they're afraid of never seeing me again? Of no one checking up on me (good God)? I wonder if that makes sense. And the parmigiana was indeed excellent!

Aloy, "emo" has some other meaning attached to it, that would entail not knowing your parents love you and hating yourself, haha :) How about "getting emotional?" My father was supportive but very worried back then... I have now lived away from home for 6 years, and it makes me more independent and all. Most importantly, I realise and appreciate the importance of family as well as my home culture :).

I think the most effective way to persuade your dad is to show him how mature and independent you are. I LOVE eggplant, and we are nearing the end of the season, here in California.
There does come a time when everyone has to go find their own path. Who knows...maybe you'll strike it rich and be able to live in both places part time. Or, at least you'll know that you can make it on your own, and appreciate your parents even more. You are so fortunate to have parents who love you so deeply, they don't want you to leave. At the time, we didn't know if it was temporary or permanent. She'd call me like twice a week, asking me in some disguised form, when I'd be coming home. There was so much guilt, especially because I knew she missed me so much more than I missed being home.

Everyone is better for the experience. You should follow your dreams.
